The problem is that the preloaded firmware doesn\u2019t work reliably.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CH552G<\/strong> is an <strong>8-bit 8051 MCU<\/strong> that has a fair number of features for the price (&lt;1$).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Doug Brown<\/strong> posted a practical step-by-step guide for reflashing the <strong>CH552G<\/strong> microcontroller with a properly working firmware he has developed.<\/p>\n<p>All key instructions below are taken from Doug\u2019s article and the comments thread.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quick checklist (the short version)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the case and solder or temporarily connect a <strong>10 k\u03a9 resistor<\/strong> between <strong>D+<\/strong> and <strong>3.3 V<\/strong> (or briefly short D+ to 3.3 V) to force the CH55x into its USB bootloader.<\/li>\n<li>Choose a flashing tool:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Windows:<\/strong> WCH ISP Tool \/ WCHISP_Studio (recommended by commenters).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Linux:<\/strong> use the isp55e0 C tool (works reliably) or the Python ch55xtool (may need extra udev\/libusb fixes).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Load\/point the tool to <strong>usb_blaster_v1.1.0.bin<\/strong> (Doug provides the release in his GitHub fork) and flash.<\/li>\n<li>Remove the resistor\/short, unplug\/replug \u2014 device should enumerate as \u201cUSB-Blaster\u201d (Altera idVendor\/idProduct).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>One of commenters with nick name KUKUS posted step by step instructions to flash the <strong>CH552G<\/strong> with <strong>WCHISPStudio<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 install CH375_DRIVER (CH372DRV.EXE from WCH website)<br \/>\n-! driver CH372DRV.EXE can be renamed CH372DRV.CAB and files be extracted with Winzip\/RAR etc.!<br \/>\n\u2013 open plastic case, add 10k resistor between D+ and 3V3<br \/>\n\u2013 install WCHISP_Tool3.7 or latest WCHISP_Studio (better!) (WCH website)<br \/>\n\u2013 if device not detected update driver from via Device_Manager using driver files from extracted .CAB<br \/>\n\u2013 make sure to select CH55x\/USB chip model CH552<br \/>\n\u2013 Object File1 = load the usb_blaster.bin file here and check box on the right<br \/>\n\u2013 Make sure \u201cEnable RST Pin as manual reset pin\u201d and \u201cRun the Taget Program \u2026\u201d are NOT checked !<\/p>\n<p>IMPORTANT!!<br \/>\n\u2013 ! Make sure \u201cAutomatic Download When Device Connect\u201d is CHECKED !<br \/>\n\u2013 insert device on USB2.0 port.<br \/>\n\u2013 it will automatically download usb_blaster.bin file in device flash memory<br \/>\n\u2013 remove 10k resistor from D+ and 3v3<br \/>\n\u2013 Plug in USB =&gt; You now have a fully functional \u201cAltera USB Blaster Device\u201d<br \/>\nTested and working in Quartus Standard 24.1 as per 2025.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-884 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/elerain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-08-27-182757.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1001\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elerain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-08-27-182757.png 1400w, https:\/\/elerain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-08-27-182757-300x215.png 300w, https:\/\/elerain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-08-27-182757-1024x732.png 1024w, https:\/\/elerain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-08-27-182757-768x549.png 768w, https:\/\/elerain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-08-27-182757-600x429.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Important tips &amp; gotchas<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the <strong>10 k\u03a9 resistor<\/strong> method (connect D+ to 3.3 V through 10 k\u03a9) rather than hard shorting longer than necessary \u2014 it\u2019s safer and worked for many commenters. After the flash, remove the resistor before rebooting.<\/li>\n<li>If you see the device enumerating as vendor 09fb product 6001 (Altera USB-Blaster) after reflashing, that\u2019s the expected result.<\/li>\n<li>Newer Quartus versions can sometimes have issues with older clone adapters. Doug notes Quartus 18.1 tends to work well; very new versions (e.g., 24.1) can sometimes hang during programming for some clones.
